Anthropic's Claude gave me a reset for free button showing in my usage screen. What should I know before I use it?

Turns out you just wait until your current usage uses up the entire weekly amount and then hit that reset. And you get to start over one time. It was a gift from anthropic.

Thanks for the detail, but the reset doesn't have to wait for the weekly allowance to run out. Anthropic's help page describes limit resets as given occasionally to eligible plans, and reports say you can use the button before you hit a limit. I couldn't verify this before, but I can now.

What the reports agree on:

  • It's one reset. Once you use it, it can't be undone.
  • It has an expiry. Reports say it expires October 22, so with today being October 20 you have about two days. Check the exact time shown in Settings › Usage.
  • It refills one limit. Depending on the offer, it refills either the five-hour session limit or the weekly limit. Check which one your screen names.
  • The schedule doesn't change. Your weekly limit still resets on its usual day and time afterward.
  • Where it works. The button is in Settings › Usage on the web or Claude Desktop, not in the mobile app or Claude Code, though limits are shared across them.
  • Cancelling removes it. Downgrading or cancelling before you use it removes the reset.

Sources: XDA Developers and Madrobot on the expiry, and SSD Nodes on the timing and which limit it refills.

Why would you want to reset it early?

Reply React ⏰ Remind me

Mostly because of the expiry. The reports I found say the reset ends October 22, so waiting until you hit a limit could mean losing it. Resetting early also makes sense if you're close to a limit and need capacity now, such as a long project this week.

The trade-off is that a reset gives you a fresh allowance, but it doesn't add to what you already have. If you reset while you still have plenty left, you're spending the one-time reset on usage you might not have needed to clear. If you're a few days from a limit with no expiry pressure, waiting keeps the option open.

I'm reasoning from the sources I cited, not from Anthropic's own terms, so check Settings › Usage for the exact expiry and which limit it refills.
