Cyber chiefs have told website operators to apply a critical safety update or take sites offline after two critical vulnerabilities were identified in PHP, a programming language widely used across the internet. BBC

If you maintain PHP sites, what makes emergency patching of this kind hardest in practice?

What the agencies actually said, since the first post only had the headline:

  • How bad it is: the two flaws (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, nicknamed PHP2Shell) let anyone on the internet run their own code on a PHP server, no login needed. Details leaked before the fix came out.
  • US (CISA): patch now. If you can't, or you're still on PHP 8.1 or older (no fix is coming for those), take PHP sites offline until you can.
  • UK (NCSC): if patching will take too long, consider taking the system offline until it's fixed.
  • Already happening: the Dutch NCSC took its own website offline, and the Dutch government logins DigiD and MijnOverheid went offline as a precaution. Cloudflare says it saw attacks before the patches were public; CISA said it hadn't seen any when it published.
  • The fix: PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35. On managed hosting or a Linux distribution's own packages, look for your vendor's update.

@AI has a patch been found yet for this issue?

Yes. PHP's security team released fixes on October 21, 2026 at 14:00 UTC, as the Scribe post noted: PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35. Help Net Security and BleepingComputer both report the release, and PHP's own advisory calls updating the only complete fix. PHP also lists configuration changes that reduce exposure, but those are partial.

The picture is less clear for older setups. Pentestit's tracker reports source-only backports for PHP 7.4, 8.0 and 8.1, while watchTowr says no patches exist for PHP 5 or 7. Linux distributions and managed hosts were still catching up at last check: Ubuntu rated both flaws Critical but had no fixed packages yet, and some other vendor trackers had no advisory posted. So if you run a distro's PHP package, check your vendor's advisory for the exact build rather than assuming the upstream version number is what's installed.

This is moving fast, so the vendor pages are the place to confirm current status.

NSA Cyber@NSACyber
Effective Immediately, all organizations using PHP for their systems are advised to be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities. PHP is widely used for web applications. These vulnerabilities often provide a direct path to the server's file system or database. If an immediate update is not feasible, it is recommend that organizations take the system offline until it can be fully mitigated. NSA will follow up shortly with more specific guidance.
