قت¹

Where it comes from

It seems to be onomatopoeic, with قَدَّ (qadda), قَطَّ (qaṭṭa), *كَتَّ (*katta), جَدَّ (jadda) → Proto-Semitic *gadd-, being variations of it, though which came first is uncertain.

Also قـ (q-) in bi-roots seems to posses the onomatopoeic meaning of breaking and cutting→reducing, especially with coronal consonants, considering قَسَّ (qassa), قَصَّ (qaṣṣa), قَلَّ (qalla), قَثَّ (qaṯṯa), قَذَّ (qaḏḏa), قَضَّ (qaḍḍa), though they have slight nuances of how the cut is like.

And to lesser extent, كـ (k-) and جـ (j-) → Proto-Semitic *g-, also posses the same meaning in كَسَّ (kassa), جَذَّ (jaḏḏa), جَزَّ (jazza), جَثَّ (jaṯṯa), جَدَّ (jadda), but considering their small number, perhaps they came from their ق (q) equivalent.

قت²

Where it comes from

From the family above due to its being cut in dry strips, like قُرْط (qurṭ, “Egyptian clover”) from قَرَطَ (qaraṭa, “to chop”), apparently in occasional distinction from رَطْبَة (raṭba, “alfalfa”) as of alfalfa in a wet (رَطْب (raṭb)) state, in spite of Bos and Käs declaring the word to come apparently from Persian قت (qot), which is rare and listed by Vullers as itself from Arabic. Note that قَتَاد (qatād, “milkvetch”) is also a faboid.

noun قَتّ · qatt · الْقَتّ · قَتٌّ

  1. lucerne (various Medicago spp.) قت: الماهية: هو الأسفست أي الرطبة وهو علف الدواب. آلات المفاصل: دهن القت أنفع شيء للرعشة يذهب بها.
