Global South¹
Where it comes from
First used in a political sense by Carl Oglesby in 1969.
proper noun the Global South · global south
-
A region predominantly composed of developing countries in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, regarded as half of a socioeconomic and political divide opposite to the Global North.
Where and what is the Global South? If you ask people on the street, many would probably not have the faintest idea. In everyday parlance and mass media, Global South has hardly become a household term. In academic and (global) policy circles, though, the term is used with much more gusto.
Opposite: Global North
global south²
proper noun the global south
- Alternative letter-case form of Global South But the summit will also show the limits of what a heterogeneous “global south” can achieve.
