Ultimately from Sanskrit मध्ये॑ (mádhye), the locative of मध्य॑ (mádhya, “inside”), either via unstressed lenition to *महे (mahe) < *मझे (majhe) < Prakrit मज्झे (majjhe) or from Prakrit *महिए (mahie) < मध्ये (mádhiye), a glide-vocalized variant.

Doublet of माँझ (māñjh), मध्य (madhya), and मद्धे (maddhe) and related to मियाना (miyānā, “medium”), दरमियाँ (darmiyā̃, “midst”), and मैदान (maidān). Cognate with Old Awadhi मांह (māṃha), महं (mahaṃ), महिं (mahiṃ), Nepali मा (mā), Gujarati માં (mā̃). More distantly, cognate with Greek μέσος (mésos), English mid, German mit, Yiddish מיט (mit).

More information

Some scholars have argued that the term is better derived from Sanskrit मध्यम् (madhyam, accusative). However, Reinöhl argues that semantically the locative is a better semantic match and is also more frequent in all historical stages of Indo-Aryan. The spontaneous nasalization can be explained as a common phenomenon in New Indo-Aryan; compare Hindi साँप (sā̃p, “snake”) from Sanskrit सर्प (sarpa).
