고대 한문의 '地震'이라는 단어에서 유래되었는데, 《죽서기년》에서 기원전 1831년 혹은 기원전 1652년에 중국의 태산에서 땅이 뒤흔들린 일을 "태산진"(泰山震)이라고 처음 표현하였다. '震'이라는 단어는 중국티베트조어의 "*dar ~ d(u/i)r "에서 유래되었으며 중세 중국어에서 '地震'으로 발전하였다.
