alac

  • /aˈlak/

Where it comes from

Probably from Latin alica through a Vulgar Latin root *alaca (compare Spanish álaga), or alternatively from Hungarian alakor, but this itself has no other explanation than being derived from Romanian, unless, formally less likely, connected to the Hurro-Urartian family of Arabic خُلَّر (ḵullar). Others have suggested a connection with Albanian akuë or lakër, from Ancient Greek.

noun alace · alac · alacul · alacele

  1. neuter einkorn wheat (Triticum monococcum)
  2. neuter spelt (Triticum spelta or Triticum aestivum subsp. spelta)
