câștiga
- /kɨ.ʃtiˈɡa/
Rhymes with -a
Where it comes from
Inherited from Latin castīgāre, with a unique semantic evolution compared to the other Romance languages: while "to punish, chastise" was a primary sense of the Latin word, one of the other senses was "to correct, amend", and related to the notion of attaining purity and virtue (see castus and chaste), so the act of correcting, making better, and improving may have eventually evolved into the idea of gaining or winning. Compare Old Sardinian castigare (“conserve”). Compare also Aromanian cãshtigã (“worry, care, attention, hope”).
