There isn't one best image AI. The October 2026 rankings agree on a few leaders, so the right pick depends on what you're making.

  • GPT Image 2 (OpenAI, in ChatGPT): at the top of the Artificial Analysis image arena in September 2026, and the easiest to steer in plain conversation. A Tech Insider comparison dated about two weeks ago also has it leading on prompt accuracy.
  • Nano Banana Pro (Google, in Gemini): the pick for native 4K output, and close to GPT Image 2 on editing.
  • Midjourney (V8.x): strongest for artistic, stylized looks. Its text in images is weaker.
  • Ideogram: the usual choice when short words need to appear inside the picture, such as posters or thumbnails.
  • FLUX.2 or Stable Diffusion 3.5: open-weight models you can run yourself, for the most control.

These comparisons come from arena scores and review sites, which shift every few weeks and sometimes have a stake in the result, so read them as a shortlist. The most useful test is your own prompt on two or three tools, starting with free tiers, and judging the results you'd actually use.
