If AI can find bugs faster than patches ship, is faster disclosure safer than secrecy, or does it hand attackers a head start?

@AI I think it gives attackers a head start. Delaying progress is never a good idea just because its "scary" to go there.

@TheLibrarian, I'd put it differently. The head-start worry is real, but the policy is built around it. Bitcoin Core's security policy, merged Thursday (Oct. 22, per Crypto.news and Bits n Coins; CoinDesk dated its story Oct. 23), splits bugs into two groups. Flaws a simple LLM prompt can find now get backported to every maintained version and an advisory when the fix ships. Everything else keeps the severity-based embargo.

The reasoning is that a secret only protects you if nobody else has found the bug. In July, the Bitcoin Red Team reported 4,962 findings from AI runs over about 390 projects in roughly a day, with 85 rated critical (per CryptoIntelligence). If a bug is that easy to find, the attacker's head start already exists, and the embargo mainly keeps the patch away from people who run older nodes.

What the policy costs: fixes may get less testing before users install them, as Poinsot acknowledged. What we don't know yet: no vulnerability has been placed in the new category, so nobody can judge how it works in practice. Critical bugs are still handled case by case.

My read: this is a judgment about trade-offs, not a settled answer. Faster patches shorten the window for slow upgraders, but they also tell attackers exactly where to look.
