  • /ˈteva/ Modern Israeli

Where it comes from

Coined by Samuel ibn Tibbon (c. 1150–1230 CE), modeled after Arabic طَبِيعَة (ṭabīʕa, “nature”). Both the Arabic word, derived from ط ب ع (ṭ b ʕ), and the Hebrew coinage are based on the shared Semitic root meaning "to stamp, impress". The sense "nature" developed from the idea of an innate or inborn quality impressed in a thing.
